The nineties

History has a habit of repeating itself. Up until recently, it was all about the 80s - Stranger Things was on Netflix, clothes were getting louder and more colourful and The Weeknd had just released Blinding Lights before the world ground to a halt.
But since we've started to crawl out of lockdown, things have changed. There is a notable tendency in people's listening trends that when life's ok we can afford to be a little more introspective and self-indulgent, but when times are hard, we tend to rely on positivity to keep us through. And, during a major global pandemic, everyone turned from the moody 80s to the cheesy 90s to help them through. When the going gets tough...well, we listen to Boyzone. Don't get me wrong, there is a sense of the passage of time here, and after the eighties trend, well, it was probably going to be the nineties' turn next. Of course, too, there is a correlation between the ages of people booking events/entertainment and the lifestyle they had growing up. And yes, we did #freeBritney. But over the last year the world seems to have gone mad for nineties music with even more gusto than ever. The relentless positivity and un-ironic campness of the music of this era is all we want to consume at the moment. And that's where Guilty Pleasures comes in... The band had the pleasure last weekend of playing at the wedding of a couple who saw them perform on the main stage at Leeds Pride festival back in 2019, and whose event had been postponed and delayed on account of lockdown several times. And boy, were they ready for a party. It was very telling of the sort of do this was going to be on account of their 6-minute long homemade first dance megamix; just, wow! You know you're on the same page as someone when their request list for the DJ has Shania Twain on it twice. And when the wedding party comes up to you onstage asking when the most appropriate song to which to start a conga line will come in the set (for reference, 'We Like to Party (The Vengabus)', obviously) - it's pretty clear the feeling this is a match made in heaven. If any of this sounds like you, then you need to check out Guilty Pleasures. It's as if a band could play your favourite song from when you were a kid...over and over again for the night. No clever twists, no gimmicks, no rearrangements - just a group of people who love the music you love as much as you do and want to share it with you as lovingly and authentically as they can. The nineties are here to stay, and Guilty Pleasures know it like they grew up with it.
